Renault returned to Formula One in 2016 after a six-year absence as a works entry. The French manufacturer purchased the struggling Lotus team, which it had previously owned between 2002 and 2010, in late 2015, as part of its renewed commitment to motorsport.

The Enstone-based team endured a tough final year as Lotus due to severe financial troubles in 2015, but it did score a memorable win with Romain Grosjean at the Belgian Grand Prix. Those issues meant Renault struggled with an under-developed car last season and it regularly failed to progress out of Q1 in qualifying.

But 2016 was always going to be a transition year and Renault has said that it will take at least two more seasons before it returns to the Formula One podium, but the legendary manufacturer is clearly targeting more titles in the years to come.

The French manufacturer has hired the highly rated Nico Hulkenberg for 2017 and the 2015 Le Mans 24-Hours winner will partner 2014 GP2 champion Jolyon Palmer, who returns for a second successive season with Renault.

Although the team is facing another year of rebuilding and getting up to speed in 2017, expect its promising driver line-up to put in an eye-catching performance or two throughout the year.
