“This is not your run of the mill circuit, with the night and the atmosphere at what is a unique venue. Racing at night is not much different in terms of visibility, but it is really nice seeing the lights reflecting off the cars and the sparks flying.”
Ricciardo in Singapore:
2011 HRT: qualified 23rd, finished 19th
2012 Toro Rosso: qualified 15th, finished 9th
2013 Toro Rosso: qualified 9th, spun off.
A string of spectacular qualifying performances in the Toro Rosso last season saw Ricciardo beat fellow former British F3 champion Jean-Eric Vergne, to the coveted graduation to the second Red Bull racing seat alongside Sebastian Vettel.
Ricciardo starts the 2014 season after 11 races at the back of the grid in 2010 with the HRT team, followed by two seasons and 39 starts for Toro Rosso, and this year will be a big step up in terms of technology and pressure. However those close to the team are confident that Daniel will handle the pressure. His happy-go-lucky persona with a penchant for music and tennis, disguises a determined and clever racer.
The 2013 season brought the man from Perth in Western Australia a career-best fifth place start at Silverstone, which he converted into an eighth placed finish. He also scored two seventh places at the Chinese and Italian Grand Prix.
A crash in the latter stages of the 2013 FORMULA 1 SINGTEL SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX was an uncharacteristic driver error and Ricciardo impressed many with his honesty and reluctance to make excuses.
