"This is a very demanding race from the physical point of view and also mentally, because as it takes place at night, it changes your rhythm a bit over the weekend. It’s a very special race with no room for mistakes, but it’s a track I like and where I have usually gone quite well.”
Alonso in Singapore:
2008 Renault: qualified 15th, won the race
2009 Renault: qualified 6th, finished 3rd
2010 Ferrari: qualified on pole and won the race
2011 Ferrari: qualified 5th, finished 3rd
2012 Ferrari: qualified 5th, finished 3rd
2013 Ferrari: qualified 7th finished 2nd
Whether it has been wringing a win out of an uncompetitive Renault or as last year, battling up the order after in a Ferrari which proved weak in qualifying, Fernando Alonso’s record of a podium finish in every Singapore Grand Prix so far, speaks for itself.
The youngest Formula One™ World Champion before Sebastian Vettel came along, Fernando was the first-ever race-winner in Singapore in 2008.
Alonso is, by most people's reckoning, the most complete driver in Formula One™ today. He is already a member of that elite group of drivers with 30 victories or more (there are only five) and he is gunning for his third world title to add to the two achieved with Renault in 2005 and 2006.
Last season, despite the Ferrari F138 struggling for qualifying pace, Alonso claimed victories in China and Spain. Then mid-season tyre revisions hurt the team's form, dropping them to third overall behind Red Bull and Mercedes in the Constructor’s Championship.
Fernando, like many of his compatriots, loves football – he's a big Real Madrid fan. He is also a magician: not just in a Formula One™ car, he actually does conjuring tricks of his own as light relief from the intensity of his work. He is also a hard-working Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF.
