22 September, Singapore - The phenomenon called Vettel rolled through Singapore once more as Red Bull Renault’s star German driver claimed his third and most commanding victory at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
Vettel, 26, won the 61-lap race by a margin of 32.627 seconds from Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso with Lotus Renault’s Kimi Raikkonen a brilliant third after a weekend of physical pain from an old back injury. It was Alonso’s fifth Singapore podium but Raikkonen’s first.
Starting from pole position, Vettel almost lost out at the start to Nico Rosberg’s Mercedes but after edging alongside and past the Red Bull Rosberg could not coax his car through Turns 1 and 2 without yielding to Vettel once more.
A withering burst of pace in the early stages was the other key to Vettel’s seventh victory of 2013 and the 33rd of his Formula 1 career, putting him one ahead of Alonso and into fourth on the list of all-time Grand Prix winners.
”The car was incredible,” said Vettel after what looked like an easy win. “I said to the team, this doesn’t just happen like that, by accident or by luck, there’s hard work behind it and I appreciate it – it’s just a pleasure to drive it around this crazy track!”
Not even a Safety Car intervention just before half-distance could halt Vettel’s progress. It came when Daniel Ricciardo’s Toro Rosso hit the wall on the outside of Turn 18 and expired. When the Safety Car went in after the 30th lap. Vettel again streaked away to assume command of the race once more.
Alonso’s fifth Singapore podium was made possible by a blindingly fast start which catapulted the two-time Singapore winner from seventh to third by the end of the opening lap.
“It was a fantastic start,” Alonso agreed. “We didn’t have the pace so we knew we had to invent something! That was the first possibility; the other was a different strategy that paid off with a second place that tastes like a victory for us.” Despite that feeling, the result leaves Alonso 60 points adrift of Vettel with just six races remaining.
One of the real stars of the evening was Raikkonen. The 33-year-old Finn almost didn’t take to the track on Saturday because of pain from a back injury sustained 12 years ago in testing in France. But he came through from 13th on the grid to claim his first Singapore podium.
“I think I had pretty OK speed and could overtake a few people,” said the laconic Finn, One of those moves was a spectacular round-the-outside move at Turn 14 to deal with the McLaren Mercedes of Jenson Button.
“Maybe it looked more tricky than it was,” said Raikkonen. “Not an easy one, but we managed to get past…”
The evening was also a tale of teams and their two cars. Raikkonen’s teammate Romain Grosjean, third on the grid, had strong early pace but retired later in the pits with a loss of engine air pressure, while Red Bull’s Mark Webber was flying in the late stages with a podium in sight but succumbed to a gearbox problem that saw the car stop in flames two laps from the finish.
That left Mercedes duo Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton in clear air to come home fourth and fifth ahead of the second Ferrari of Felipe Massa. McLaren’s Button and Sergio Perez were next with Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg and Force India’s Adrian Sutil taking the final two points-paying positions.
Adding another of the drivers’ favourite ‘trophies’ to his weekend, Vettel also set the race’s fastest lap of 1 minute 48.574 on lap 46, an average speed of 167.940 kilometres per hour.

22 September, Singapore - Bird and Bamber were the names you needed if you wanted to win the two support race categories at Marina Bay Street Circuit ahead of today's 2103 FORMULA 1 SINGTEL SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX.
In the second GP2 race run over 20 laps of the 5.073-km track Carlin’s Sam Bird put pole position to perfect use, streaking away at the start to win by a comfortable 5.787 seconds from Marcus Ericsson of DAMS with Fabio Leimer third in the Racing Engineering car.
Leimer now leads Bird by just seven points as they head for a thrilling series finale with two more races in Abu Dhabi in November.
“I’m pushing him,” said Bird after his fifth race win of the 2013 series. “We’re right there fighting for the title to the last race of the season. Every lap was difficult – it’s so hot out there.”
Leimer, 24, was initially delighted with his podium: “Sam is giving me a hard time,” he said, “but that’s fine, that’s what the championship is all about.” But some of the gloss was taken off the day when the stewards fined the Swiss driver not once, but twice.
One came when the team allowed a wheel to roll into the fast lane in the pits. The other was for an incident on the slow-down lap.
Leimer was on his way back to pit lane for the podium ceremony when he collected Alex Rossi’s Caterham, making its way back to the support paddock, both cars suffering some damage.
New Zealanders dominated the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia race, half of whose 12 laps were run under the Safety Car after a second-lap incident left Alif Hamdan’s GT3 Cup Car in the wall between Turns 14 and 15 with substantial damage back and front.
Released for just three racing laps at the finish, 23-year-old pole-winner and series newcomer Bamber held on in his Nexus Racing entry to win by just over a second from compatriot Craig Baird, the winner here for the last two years, in the SC Global Racing entry.
Team Eagle’s Martin Ragginger was third, meaning Bamber heads for the Shanghai showdown races with a 16-point lead over the Austrian driver as Baird does not score championship points for his one-off appearance.
In Class B series leader Egidio Perfetti of Team Mentos for once had to play second fiddle to Francis Tjia’s OpenRoad Racing entry but still holds a commanding lead as they head to the Middle East.

21 September, Singapore - World Champion Sebastian Vettel set himself up for a hat-trick of victories at Marina Bay Street Circuit when he planted his Red Bull Renault on pole position for Sunday’s 2013 Formula 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix.
Vettel, winner here in 2011 and 2012, took his second Singapore pole, his fifth of 2013 and the 41st of his career with a stunning display of pace and commitment around the 23-corner, 5.073km layout.
“Even though it hasn’t been on the calendar for decades,” said Vettel, “it still feels like a classic and it’s a very nice place to come to. It’s such a nice race, it means a lot to me.”
In the second segment of the qualifying hour Vettel set a time of 1 minute 42.905 seconds, the fastest ever seen in Singapore; in the final Q3 segment he improved to 1:42.841, gambled on not making a second run then watched the monitors anxiously as his competitors tried desperately to match him.
“It’s a weird feeling,” he admitted, “to stand in the garage with two minutes to go, it’s too late, you see the others on their final attempt and there’s nothing you can do.”
Three of those others came close: teammate Mark Webber was quick early in his second run but tailed off and was edged out by Romain Grosjean’s Lotus Renault, then Nico Rosberg’s Mercedes claimed the other front-row spot with a time just 0.091s slower than his fellow-German.
Rosberg, who finished second in Singapore in 2008, said Vettel had been just out of reach all weekend. “But second gives me a good start,” he added, “and I’m confident with our race pace.”
Grosjean bounced back brilliantly from a challenging Friday with various mechanical problems. “It was a complicated start to the weekend,” said the Frenchman, “so third is a good place to start from. In the end yesterday didn’t look too bad and I knew we had a good baseline to start from.”
In Saturday’s opening track action England’s Jolyon Palmer pulled off a stunning comeback to win the first GP2 race in a 1-2 finish with Carlin teammate Felipe Nasr of Brazil.
The two started the 28-lap race from the front row of the grid but pole-sitter Palmer dwelt on the line and was passed by both Nasr and championship leader Fabio Leimer’s Racing Engineering entry.
By the time the pit stops came and went Palmer was 15 seconds behind Nasr, but on the harder Pirelli tyres he clawed his way back relentlessly, passed the Brazilian at Turn 6 on lap 25 and streaked away to win by 13 seconds.
James Calado was third for ART Grand Prix while Leimer came home fifth – good enough to extend his title lead to 12 points as nearest rival Sam Bird could manage only eighth. Bird will have his chance to fight back in Sunday’s sprint race: the top eight in Race 1 are reversed to form the top eight starters so Bird will be on pole.
Palmer’s father Jonathan, a former Grand Prix driver with several teams including Tyrrell, was thrilled with his son’s second GP2 victory: “This is the best win ever,” he said. “But he made it hard work! He bogged the start then got held up by Leimer. To come from 15 seconds behind and overtake your teammate on the same tyre strategy is a phenomenal effort. He’s turning into a very special driver.”
It’s a tale of two Kiwis in the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia where series leader Earl Bamber of Nexus Racing will start Sunday’s 12-lap race from pole position with Craig Baird alongside him in the SC Global GT3 Cup car.
Bamber set a time of 2m 19.955s on his second quick run to edge out his compatriot by just 0.087s. With Baird – winner here for the last two years – not engaged in the full series that gives 23-year-old Bamber the upper hand over title rival Martin Ragginger of Austria, whose Team Eagle entry starts from fourth on the grid. Reigning champion Alex Imperatori starts third in the Team Starchase car.
With only the Singapore race and two more in the final round in China remaining, series newcomer Bamber leads by 13 points after taking four wins this season, the same number as Ragginger.
The top six Porsches on the Marina Bay Street Circuit grid are covered by less than half a second.

20 Sep, Singapore - World Champions Red Bull Racing threw down the gauntlet at Singapore’s Marina Bay Street Circuit when Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber ended the first day’s practice for Sunday’s 2013 FORMULA 1 SINGTEL SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX in first and second places.
Vettel was six-tenths of a second faster than his teammate but the really bad news for everyone else was the margin between the German and third-placed Nico Rosberg’s Mercedes, which was more than a second.
With Marina Bay’s Turn 10, the so-called Singapore Sling, now a single sweeping left-hander lap times were expected to drop this year – and they soon did.
Early in the second 90-minute free practice session Webber clocked 1 minute 46.157 seconds – already two-tenths of a second faster than the time Lewis Hamilton set to claim pole position for McLaren Mercedes last year.
When they changed to Pirelli’s red-walled Supersoft tyres the times really tumbled and as the teams completed their light fuel load runs, triple World Champion Vettel, winner here for the last two years, lowered the mark to 1.44.249 – faster than the best pole position time seen in Singapore, the 1:44.381 set by Vettel himself in 2011.
Earlier in the evening Jolyon Palmer claimed his maiden pole position for the first of the weekend’s GP2 races, which is scheduled for Saturday at 4:05pm.
Englishman Palmer’s #10 Carlin entry clocked 1m 53.600s to edge out teammate Felipe Nasr of Brazil by just a quarter of a second in a half-hour session interrupted by an early accident to New Zealander Mitch Evans.
Evans, the reigning GP3 champion and a protégé of Formula 1 star Mark Webber, became the first victim of the ‘new’ Turn 10 when his Arden International entry hit the wall on the outside of the left-hander shortly after the session started.
Swiss driver Fabio Leimer of Racing Engineering, who leads the championship by six points, was third-quickest but nearest rival Sam Bird’s Russian Time entry could do no better than 10th as time and the Marina Bay traffic caught the Englishman out.
In the Porsche Carrera Cup free practice session that kick-started the weekend’s racing action, title-chasing Martin Ragginger put his Team Eagle 911 GT3 Cup Car on pole position but his margin over Singapore specialist Craig Baird in the SC Global car was just a tenth of a second.
Ragginger will be hoping to go one better than last year when he also claimed the Singapore pole but finished second-best to Baird, who is not a series regular.
Reigning PCCA champion Alexandre Imperatori has had a lean season by his standards – the Swiss-German driver hasn’t won a race yet – but he is third-fastest at this stage for PCC Team Starchase, one place ahead of another front-running New Zealander – series leader Earl Bamber in the Nexus Racing Porsche.

19 Sep, Singapore - That’s how McLaren Mercedes star Jenson Button describes the Singapore Grand Prix – and the urbane Englishman has had more experience of the Marina Bay Street Circuit than most.
Button, 33, is one of just three drivers to have completed every racing lap in Singapore – that’s 303 laps of the track in the five races so far – and he loves coming back.
“I remember the first time we raced at Singapore [in 2008]; it seemed incredible to think that we could hold a Formula 1 race at night,” says Button.
“I must say, the thrill and novelty of racing through spot-lit streets is just as intense for me today as it was when we first raced there – it’s a unique spectacle, and one that I think is brilliant for F1. In fact, the Singapore Grand Prix is one of the wonders of modern sport.”
Button and his 21 colleagues face no fewer than seven ‘fly-away’ races to complete their annual globe-trotting marathon. Starting – already! – its second five-year stint as a World Championship venue, Singapore is ready for the 13th round of the year with two-time Marina Bay winner Sebastian Vettel again leading the drivers’ standings for Red Bull Renault.
With two straight wins in Singapore and six victories in 2013 so far, Vettel’s #1 Red Bull Renault is again the form horse coming to the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
“I think it’s one of the toughest races of the year to be honest, so to win is an amazing moment and you feel you deserve the champagne!” says the German, now equal with Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso on 32 Grand Prix victories.
“It’s a very long race; the full two hours so the race just seems to go on forever. The circuit itself is a killer because there are so many bumps, there’s no room for mistakes,” Vettel adds.
Despite podium finishes in 2010 and 2011 Vettel’s teammate Mark Webber has never really felt at home on the SIngapore streets but the popular Aussie wants a top result to say farewell in this, his final F1 season.
“Hot, bumpy and night!” is how the 37-year-old veteran sums up Singapore. “The last sector is probably the toughest to get right, it’s a very demanding last sector and the rhythm is very important over the bumps and the curves.”
Paul Hembery from sole F1 tyre supplier Pirelli is keenly aware of the Singapore challenge, particularly after two ‘traditional’ high-speed tracks like Spa-Francorchamps and Monza: “There’s lots of street furniture such as painted white lines and manholes that compromise grip and traction,” Hembery explains.
“We’re racing at night, which presents a unique set of parameters for the tyres to deal with when it comes to the way that track and ambient temperatures evolve. The cars also carry the heaviest fuel load of the year, which again has a direct effect on tyre wear and degradation. It’s a long race, and that gives the teams plenty of scope to come up with some interesting strategies at what is a truly spectacular event in every sense.”
Now that the frenzy of speculation over his future has settled down – he’s going back to Ferrari – Kimi Raïkkönen is ready to kick-start his last few races as a Lotus Renault driver with a best-ever result in the Lion City.
“I really like going to Singapore,” says the 33-year-old Finn, who hasn’t won since the opening round of the year in Australia. “It’s a great place to be, I love the local food, and I don’t mind the unusual times we run in the car as it means I don’t have to get up so early!
“I have some unfinished business after my three Grands Prix there so far, as I enjoy the circuit but have not yet had a podium.”
That could be because Raïkkönen has never started on pole here. As a street circuit, and one where overtaking opportunities are at a premium, Singapore puts the spotlight on a good performance in qualifying: start near the front, stay out of trouble and maximise your chances of a top result. Proof of that pudding is in the Singapore statistics.
The first year, 2008, was an anomaly for reasons which subsequently became notorious: Fernando Alonso came through from 15th on the grid to snatch an unlikely win for Renault. And pole-winner Felipe Massa was a strong contender for victory until his team released him with the fuel hose still dangling from his Ferrari…
In the next three seasons the man who claimed pole also claimed victory: Lewis Hamilton in 2009 for McLaren, Alonso in 2010 for Ferrari, and Vettel in 2011 for Red Bull. And while the German didn’t start from pole on his way to winning again last year, he was up near the front on the second row.
Speaking of Massa, who is leaving Ferrari at the end of the year, he knows just how hard it is to do well at Marina Bay: “Everything counts here,” he says.” If you make the slightest mistake at a corner, then you pay a high price. You have to take care at every corner and it’s a long track – one lap here is like two at Monaco, so precision and consistency are important, especially in qualifying when you have to put everything together perfectly. In fact, I’d say it’s harder to win at Singapore than Monaco. The track is longer and more complicated, a lap is around 1m 48s while Monaco is much shorter.”
We started with an Englishman, so let’s finish the same way. Unlike Button, Marussia’s Max Chilton had his first Singapore outing only last year, putting it to great effect by winning one of the two GP2 support races.
Max, 22, is back as a fully-fledged Grand Prix driver, and he shares his compatriot’s enthusiasm. “Working to European hours is always interesting,” says Chilton, “but I’ve seen the floodlights first-hand so I know that while it feels like night-time in the Paddock, it’s like daylight on the track.”
And that, for millions of F1 fans around the world, is the Singapore Grand Prix in a nutshell…
Singapore: The stats that matter
It’s just as well today’s F1 drivers are super-fit athletes: the Singapore climate and the demands of the 23-turn Marina Bay Street Circuit mean each of them will lose up to 3 litres of fluid in the course of the 61-lap race. Caterham’s Charles Pic has only been here once but knows what he needs to do: “My fluid intake over the week will increase each day to the point where I’ll take on up to five or six litres of liquid before the race starts,” says the young French driver. “That’s one of the keys to performing to the maximum – being properly hydrated means you can focus 100% in the car, and that’s vital around a circuit as technical as Singapore.”
Only three drivers have completed every racing lap of the five Singapore races staged so far: Fernando Alonso for Renault (2008-09) and Ferrari (2010-11-12), Jenson Button (Honda 2008, Brawn GP 2009, McLaren Mercedes 2010-11-12) and Sebastian Vettel (Toro Rosso 2008, Red Bull Racing 2009-10-11-12)
Singapore is such a challenge that only World Champions have ever won here! Alonso in 2008 and 2010 (he was World Champion in 2005-06), Lewis Hamilton in 2009 (World Champion in 2008) and Vettel in 2011012 (he was World Champion in 2010-11-12).
The narrowest winning margin in the five-race history of the Singapore Grand Prix is 0.293 seconds, the gap that separated winner Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari from the Red Bull Renault of Sebastian Vettel in 2010. The widest margin of victory is 9.634s, the gap between Lewis Hamilton’s winning McLaren and the Toyota of Timo Glock in 2009.
The official lap record is held by Kimi Raïkkönen, whose Ferrari clocked 1:45.599/172.740 km/h in 2008. Just for the record, however, Fernando Alonso, also in a Ferrari, recorded a time of 1:47.976s in 2010, an average lap speed of 169.137 km/h – which is actually the fastest race lap since the circuit was slightly modified to 5.073km in 2010. But…
… there is another twist to that tale this year. Turn 10, the so-called ‘Singapore Sling’, has been modified for 2013. What was Turns 10a-10b-10c with a left-right-left kink is now a single left-hander. The straightening-out process means the official track length is now 5.066km – so we should see a new lap record set this year if that change is taken into official account. Alonso himself has been doing some simulator work and the Spaniard says the lap time will come down by a second or so. A Formula 1 car at 300 km/h travels 83 metres a second.
Singapore places heavy demands on every component of the Grand Prix car. The only ones in contact with the ground are the Pirelli tyres, and the Italian company is bringing its Supersoft (P Zero Red) and Medium (P Zero White) compounds to Marina Bay. The Supersofts, last seen at work in Canada earlier in the season, offer traction and grip while the Mediums are more durable; this is one step harder than the Soft compound used as the ‘Prime’ tyre last year.
Two of the 22 drivers are new to Singapore: Finn Valtteri Bottas at Williams and Frenchman Jules Bianchi at Marussia. Three others are also F1 rookies but raced in GP2 here last year: Britain’s Max Chilton at Marussia and Dutchman Giedo van der Garde at Caterham won the GP2 races; Mexican Esteban Gutiérrez at Sauber was the other, who finished second and sixth.
Singapore’s is the longest Grand Prix of the year: last year the Safety Car interventions pushed race-winner Vettel’s overall time out beyond the two-hour limit, and the race was cut by two laps to 59. The top three drivers all two-stopped on their way to a podium finish.
It’s also the race where the cars start with their heaviest fuel load, due in part to the stop-start nature of a 23-turn layout and the almost constant acceleration out of corners.
The youngest driver in the 2013 field is Sauber’s Mexican, Esteban Gutiérrez, born in August 1991, which makes him 22; the oldest is Aussie Mark Webber of Red Bull, born in the same month but 15 years earlier, meaning he is 37. This is Webber’s final F1 visit to Singapore before he moves to endurance racing with Porsche in 2014.

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and Singapore GP will be reconfiguring Turn 10 (Singapore Sling) ahead of the 2013 FORMULA 1 SINGTEL SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX, so that cars will now negotiate a flowing left-hander before accelerating towards the Anderson Bridge.
Based on simulations conducted by the FIA, the speed of cars approaching the realigned Turn 10 can be expected to increase by up to 40km/h. As an added safety measure, an extra layer of TecPro barriers will line the end of the run-off.
Sections of the track to be resurfaced
Some sections of the Marina Bay Street Circuit will undergo minor resurfacing as a result of use by daily traffic. These include: the first three turns, Esplanade Drive, Turn 5 and Turn 8. The Pit Lane will also be resurfaced as some ground settlement has been observed.

26 June 2013, Singapore– Fans flocking
to Marina Bay for the 2013 FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX are in for a triple treat as two of the world’s outstanding race series, GP2 and the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, return to support Formula One™ on the challenging Singapore street circuit in September.
GP2 is widely recognised as the premier feeder category for Formula One™, as a quick look at the 2013 Grand Prix field will show: Mercedes duo Nico Rosberg – winner in Monaco in May – and Lewis Hamilton were the first two GP2 champions respectively, Sauber’s Nico Hülkenberg, Williams driver Pastor Maldonado and Romain Grosjean of Lotus took out the title from 2009-2011, and reigning GP2 champion Davide Valsecchi is the test and development driver for Lotus.
In 2012, when GP2 visited Singapore for the first time, the 31-lap feature race went to England’s Max Chilton, while Dutchman Giedo van der Garde won the 22-lap sprint. Both men are now fully-fledged Formula One™ drivers with Marussia and Caterham respectively.
Singapore’s will be the 10th of 11 GP2 rounds in 2013, with 26 drivers vying for the crown. Monegasque driver Stefano Coletti (left) won the sprint race in his home town in late May to lead the overall standings on 120 points from Brazilian Felipe Nasr on 96, while their respective teams Rapax and Carlin are separated by a single point.
The GP2 car is the Dallara GP2/11 powered by a four-litre, 612 bhp Mecachrome engine. Like Formula One™ cars they use a range of four Pirelli tyre compounds and are capable of top speeds around 330 km/h.
No stranger to Marina Bay, Porsche Carrera Cup Asia
is celebrating the completion of a decade of high-calibre sportscar racing in this part of the world – but Europeans and Kiwis are the dominant force at the moment, at least in the cockpit of the 3797cc six-cylinder machines.
Leading the charge for the 2013 title after five races
at three different venues was New Zealander Earl Bamber (right), now resident in Malaysia and racing for that country’s Nexus Racing team. Bamber, 23, won both races at the third meeting of the season in Zhuhai to lead Martin Ragginger by four points. Ragginger, a 25-year-old Austrian, won the first three races of the 2013 series; Singapore fans will remember that he planted the Team Eagle entry on pole here last year before coming second to another New Zealander, Craig Baird, in the 12-lap race.
With all drivers racing in the universally popular Porsche GT3 Cup, based on the road-going GT3 RS, Porsche Carrera Cup Asia also spices up the action further with a Class B for non-professional drivers. Here it’s Singapore driver Yuey Tan who is flying the local flag, the Dorr McElrea Racing man currently second to Mentos Racing’s Egidio Perfetti, who is also based in Singapore, in that race-within-a-race.
Tickets for the 2013 FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX race-weekend (20 to 22 September) are available for sale via www.singaporegp.sg, the ticketing hotline +65 6738 6738 as well as at all authorised ticketing agents.

Legendary singer TOM JONES will perform at the Village Stage in Zone 1 on Sunday, 22 September.
An artist with a true rhythm and blues soul, the Grammy Award winner has released a succession of gold and platinum singles and albums, which include hit singles such as 'Delilah', 'Sex Bomb', 'It's Not Unusual' and 'What's New Pussycat'.
Tom Jones was knighted by Her Majesty The Queen in 2006 in recognition of his services to music. Esteemed singer-songwriter and philanthropist BOB GELDOF will rock the Village Stage in Zone 1 on Saturday, 21 September.
The Irishman rose to fame as the lead singer of Irish rock band The Boomtown Rats in the late 1970s and early 1980s, producing the hits 'Rat Trap' and 'I Don't Like Mondays'. In 1984, he co-wrote one of the best-selling singles of all time, 'Do They Know It's Christmas', and raised over £8 million for famine relief in Ethiopia. Geldof has since devoted much of his time campaigning for debt relief for developing countries, which led to the organisation of Live 8 concerts and raising over £150 million as a result.
His efforts have culminated in a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize, an honorary knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II, as well as a 'Man of Peace' title which recognises individuals who have made an "outstanding contribution to international social justice and peace", amongst numerous other awards and nominations.
Entry to Bob Geldof's concert is included with any three-day 2013 FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX Zone 1 ticket.
Hailed as "one of the most highly touted would-be stars of 2013" by British national daily The Guardian, soul singer-songwriter LAURA MVULA has taken the United Kingdom by storm. Despite having only released her debut album Sing To The Moon in March this year, the 26 year old has already been nominated for the 2013 BRIT Awards Critics' Choice, awarded fourth place for BBC's Sound of 2013 and described as "the voice of 2013" by The Evening Standard.
The Guardian has even coined a new genre – "gospeldelia" – for her "soulful vocals and florid soundscapes". Listen out for Mvula's velvety harmonies at the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre (Friday), Village Stage (Saturday), and Paddock Club Lifestyle Area (Sunday).
English illusionist DYNAMOhas crossed the River Thames on foot, levitated comedian Matt Lucas four feet off the ground at the Emirates Stadium in London, and performed dozens of jaw-dropping tricks to unsuspecting strangers and celebrities as part of his award-winning television series Dynamo: Magician Impossible.
Over the race weekend, Dynamo will be weaving his brand of brilliant street magic throughout Zone 1 and Zone 4. Don't say we didn't warn you.
ENNIO MARCHETTO leaves audiences in stitches with his hilarious brand of quick-change cabaret using dramatic paper costumes that bring to mind famous personalities like Cher, Marilyn Monroe and even Star Wars' C-3PO. The award-winning "Living Paper Cartoon" will perform at the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre (Friday), Village Stage (Saturday), and Paddock Club Lifestyle Area (Sunday).
Patrons in Zone 4 will also be treated to a spectacular outdoor theatre showpiece over the race weekend at the Padang. For the first time, street theatre groups from France, Italy and Spain are collaborating to produce CHAOS, a large-scale action-packed production that tells the story of the Earth's evolution through the ingenious use of larger-than-life creatures, fiery dances and breathtaking aerial performances.
Afro-Parisian musician DABY TOURÉ's silky vocals are a cultural feast to the ears. Be transported to the rich landscapes of the Sahara when Daby Touré sings at the Esplanade Park Stage (Friday), Paddock Club Lifestyle Area (Saturday), and the Marina Stage (Sunday).
THE DHOL FOUNDATION have put a twist of modern swagger into the traditional North Indian dhol drum. Having performed at the 2012 Olympics Closing Ceremony and opened the Queen's Coronation Celebration (2013), this group is a must-watch at the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre (Saturday) and Village Stage (Sunday).
WAIORA is a unique collaboration between Horomona Horo – the only full-time practitioner of an ancient Maori musical art-form – and guitarist Joshua Rogers. They have made waves internationally with their hypnotic blend of tribal music that explore the Maori culture using traditional instruments, waiata (song), western instruments and traditional dance. They will be performing at the Esplanade Park Stage (Saturday), Marina Stage (Sunday), and Paddock Club Lifestyle Area (Sunday).
Bursting onto the music scene barely a year ago, home-grown soul-folk band THE SAM WILLOWS have already won numerous local music awards, launched a sold-out debut EP and garnered over 100,000 views on their YouTube page. Fresh from their North American tour, the quartet will be performing at the Paddock Club Lifestyle Area on Friday, and the Marina Stage and Esplanade Park Stage on Sunday.
Dance and sing along to the infectious tracks by THE GREAT SPY EXPERIMENT – one of Singapore's leading indie bands – who will be performing their original numbers for one night only at the Village Stage on Friday.
Vocal percussionist and singer-songwriter WEISH's creative use of the looper (audio instrument) results in an exquisite landscape of sounds. Listen out for Weish at the Marina Stage and Paddock Club Lifestyle Area on Friday, and the Esplanade Park Stage on Sunday.
Their passion for Indian classical music has made the Chinese sibling-trio of FLAME OF THE FOREST a force to be reckoned with. The brothers' harmonious renditions of traditional Indian, western classical, Chinese oriental, pop and jazz tunes on the sitar, tabla and violin is as enigmatic as it is intoxicating. Be captivated at the Paddock Club Lifestyle Area on Friday.
An accomplished guitarist and violinist make up the talented duo of ZSA + CLAIRE whose renditions of folk and pop hits have captivated audiences island-wide. Catch Zsa + Claire at the Marina Stage on Friday and Sunday, and the Esplanade Park Stage on Saturday.

20 May 2013, Singapore – With four more months to the highly anticipated 2013 FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX, race promoter Singapore GP has unveiled a slew of exciting activities as part of the 'Rev Up Singapore!' campaign to share the excitement of Formula OneTM across the island.
New initiatives planned to rev up Singapore this year include organising a Thursday Pit Lane Walk for non-ticketholders, a motorsports carnival in collaboration with the Institute of Technical Education, free preview screenings of the movie RUSH, a corporate 'give-back' ticket scheme as well as exclusive behind-the-scene tours for students. In addition, Singapore GP will be expanding the well-received Singapore GP School Visit programme introduced last year.
Mr Colin Syn, Deputy Chairman of Singapore GP Pte Ltd said, "Singapore GP is expanding on our efforts in previous years to share our excitement and passion for Formula One™ to even more Singaporeans this year with the 'Rev Up Singapore!' campaign. We invite people of all ages to participate in our activities as we gear up for another exciting instalment of the FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX."
Mr Lionel Yeo, Chief Executive of the Singapore Tourism Board added, "STB is fully behind Singapore GP's efforts to introduce more activities to strengthen community engagement around the Singapore race. Since its debut five years ago, Singaporeans and our local communities have been integral to the successful hosting of the Formula One™ race. Their line-up of activities will help to widen local participation and engender greater interest and pride in our race, the crown jewel in the entire Formula One calendar."
For the first time ever, 2,500 members of the public will be able to experience a Pit Lane walk for a privileged view of the Formula One™ garages up-close, as well as the F1 Village in Zone 1 of the Marina Bay Street Circuit, before the Circuit Park opens to ticketholders.
The Thursday Pit Lane Experience will take place on 19 September, a day ahead of the Circuit Park's opening.
Usually accessible only to Formula One Paddock Club™ ticketholders over the race weekend, the Pit Lane Walk offers participants an exclusive first-hand view of the team garages at the Pit Building.
These 2,500 participants will also get to enjoy the F1 Village's carnival atmosphere, explore the interactive game stations, be entertained by live stage performances and roving acts as well as check out the memorabilia at the merchandise booths.
Singapore GP has teamed up with Cathay-Keris Films to present free preview screenings of RUSH to 1,500 lucky Singaporeans. The screening will take place at the Cathay Cineplexes in Ang Mo Kio, Causeway Point, Cineleisure Orchard, Downtown East and The Cathay on 18 September 2013, before the movie officially opens in Singapore.
Directed by two-time Academy Award winner Ron Howard (The Da Vinci Code, A Beautiful Mind), RUSH is based on a true story about the epic rivalry between legendary Formula One™ drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda during the 1976 Formula One™ season.
The spectacular re-creation of the rivalry between the two world champions stars Chris Hemsworth (The Avengers, Thor) as the charismatic James Hunt, Daniel Brühl (Inglourious Basterds) as perfectionist Niki Lauda, and Olivia Wilde (TRON: Legacy) as English model Suzy Miller, Hunt's first wife.
As a prelude to the 2013 FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX festivities, Singapore GP will be organising a motorsports carnival open to members of the public. This will be held in conjunction with the ITE Fiesta on 25 and 26 August at ITE College Central. Visitors will be able to try their hand at interactive Formula One™-themed game stations, test their racing skills with the Singapore GP simulators, and embark on a visual journey through a photo exhibition that relives five years of night racing.
Singapore GP is also reaffirming ties with the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) with an extension of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two parties. Under the MOU, more than 4,000 ITE students have been offered this unique training and work experience programme at the Marina Bay Street Circuit since 2009.
The renewed five-year collaboration will see 1,000 ITE students undergo training and real-life work experience at the FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX annually.
Students from polytechnics and universities in Singapore will also be able to attend a series of educational talks by members of the Formula One™ fraternity, including a talk by Lotus F1 team and Pirelli. More speakers in the series will be announced shortly.
Students can submit their topics of interest on the Singapore GP Official Facebook Page or by tweeting it to @F1nightrace with the hashtag #f1sgp101.
Singapore GP is encouraging corporate clients to contribute a portion of their tickets to deserving local causes, with the introduction of the 'Singapore GP Give-Back' scheme. This will give Singaporeans who would not normally be able to attend the race a chance to experience the thrills of the Marina Bay Street Circuit. Having received positive feedback from the participants of the pilot programme last year, Singapore GP is working with the People's Association to expand the School Visit programme to 15 secondary schools this year. Students will gain an insight into the world of Formula One™ through educational talks, interactive game stations and a photography exhibition. Some of the secondary schools Singapore GP will be visiting include Crescent Girls', Outram and Ping Yi.
Selected students from the different schools will also get a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participate in an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the Marina Bay Street Circuit in September. This tour will offer participants a first-hand look into the Paddock, team garages and hospitality homes, and even restricted areas like the Race Control room, podium and commentary booths.
In addition, participants will visit the F1 Village and be one of the first to enjoy a sneak peek of what race fans can experience at the 2013 FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX.

11 March 2013, Singapore – Race promoter Singapore GP is inviting volunteers to sign up as a volunteer race official for the 2013 FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX. Public registration for marshal recruitment is open from today, 11 March until 31 March 2013 (11:59).
"Since the inaugural night race in 2008, we have trained over 2,500 volunteer marshals," said Mr. Gabriel Tan, Clerk of the Course, Singapore GP Pte Ltd. "With a retention rate of at least 85% – one of the highest in Formula One™ – it is as much a pleasure as it is a challenge to continually raise the bar each year. I look forward to working with the new volunteers in making the 2013 FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX a roaring success."
Now in its sixth year, the night race continues to receive glowing reviews from the Formula One™ fraternity, including Mr. Bernie Ecclestone, who hails Singapore as a "jewel in F1's crown which keeps getting polished."
A total of 150 positions are available in key trackside functions, including observers, track marshals, flag marshals and fire marshals. Depending on the area of responsibility, each marshal can expect to clock a minimum of 32 hours of training. First-time race officials will attend approximately seven days of theory and practical training, conducted over weekends starting in May 2013. Highlights of the hands-on training include performing recovery and extrication exercises on a Formula BMW open-wheeler and a Subaru WRX.
Similar to previous years, senior officials will continue to receive specialist hands-on training in fire safety and track recovery, as well as attachment opportunities overseas. This year, 36 senior officials have been selected to travel to Australia for the 2013 Clipsal 500 Adelaide and the 2013 FORMULA 1 ROLEX AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX as well as Malaysia for the 2013 FORMULA 1 PETRONAS MALAYSIAN Grand Prix to gain practical trackside experience.
Members of the public interested to apply for the volunteer marshal positions will need to be 18 and above as of 1 January 2013, physically fit, fluent in written and spoken English, commit to all scheduled training sessions and available to participate in all three days of the race (20 to 22 September). Successful candidates will be notified by 30 April 2013. Applications must be submitted via Singapore GP’s official recruitment website https://raceofficials.singaporegp.sg.
The efforts of the Singapore volunteer marshals in previous years have not gone unnoticed, with two of them receiving international recognition for their contributions to motorsports.
Volunteer race official Miss Nurulaini Ariffin has been selected for the inaugural Women in Motor Sport Officials Exchange Programme, a collaboration between the Singapore Motor Sports Association (SMSA) and the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport Limited, the National Sporting Authority for motor sport in Australia.
Officiating for the FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX since 2009, Miss Ariffin is the second female to be appointed to the role of Sector Chief in the history of the night race.
As part of the programme, SMSA will sponsor Miss Ariffin to represent Singapore in various Women in Motor Sports activities and participate in the 2013 FORMULA 1 ROLEX AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX in Melbourne as a race official.
Another regular race official has also been recognised for his efforts with the Grand Prix, this time by the FIA Volunteers and Awards Commission at the 2012 FIA Officials Awards. Singaporean Mr Michael Gray received top honours as FIA Best Secretary Of The Meeting of the Season.
Joaquín Verdegay de la Vega, President of FIA Volunteers and Officials Commission, said it was "not easy to have to choose between so many energetic, motivated and efficient personalities who have played a major role in motor sport or helped to improve it."
"His involvement in Motor Sport, his leadership and sense of initiative scored an immediate hit with the members of the Awards Committee of the Volunteers and Officials Commission."
Mr. Gray, who has been volunteering with the FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX since 2008, said, "It is a great honour to receive the FIA Best Secretary of the Meeting of the Season award. To start from scratch five years ago was an enormous challenge, and I owe many people thanks in helping me to learn the ropes and carry out my job. The award is a reflection of the hard work put in by the 1,200 volunteers who help run the race and are the unsung heroes of the Grand Prix. I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with such a fantastic team of committed volunteers."

6 March 2013, Singapore – Race and event promoter Singapore GP Pte Ltd announces its first Padang Stage headliner for this season's edition of the 2013 FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX with the Las Vegas alternative rock band THE KILLERS performing post-qualifying on Saturday, 21 September 2013.
The multi award-winning, multi-platinum band is set to ignite the Padang stage in their first ever concert in Singapore for one night only. Entry to the concert is included with any three-day 2013 FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX ticket.
In their first ten years together, THE KILLERS has earned a reputation as one of the world's finest live bands and amassed a collection of BRIT, MTV, NME, Q, World Music and most recently ASCAP Awards (see Annex 1). Dubbed by Rolling Stone and MTV as the hottest band of 2005, THE KILLERS first blazed onto the Indie scene in 2003 with their hit 'Mr. Brightside'.
Consisting of Brandon Flowers (lead vocals, keyboards), Dave Keuning (guitar, backing vocals), Mark Stoermer (bass, backing vocals) and Ronnie Vannucci Jr. (drums, percussion), the band has been a key player in the post-punk revival movement, drawing their influences from music styles of the 1980s.
Since then, they have a string of accolades to their name and their albums have made it to the Billboard 200 Albums of the Year charts for seven years. THE KILLERS have also been listed #3 by Amazon.com UK in the Top 10 best-selling artists and albums of the decade. Their four albums Hot Fuss, Sam's Town, Day & Age and Battle Born have sold over 15 million copies worldwide. They have become one of the world's biggest rock and roll bands in the process and found themselves needing time to, as Flowers puts it, "put everything into perspective".
After a year-long hiatus which saw three of four Killers launch solo careers, the band's rapturous return headlining the inaugural Lollapalooza in Chile convinced them to get back together and write songs. Battle Born was the result, incorporating elements from each of the records that came before it – a mix of yearning mythic America, gratuitous hooks and pop nous. To borrow Flower's maxim, "Doing what we do best".
With the record in the can, the band is eager to get on the road and re-introduce THE KILLERS to the world. "I feel like there are a lot of live moments on this album, more than we've ever had before", says Flowers.
This September, fans can look forward to a charged-up Saturday night as THE KILLERS rock Singapore's biggest outdoor stage as part of their Battle Born World Tour with hits such as 'Runaways', 'Mr. Brightside', 'Human', 'Somebody Told Me', 'All These Things That I've Done' and 'When You Were Young'.
